It may seem that a postmodern or modernist point of view would be that we can only know what natural science tells us. On the other hand, philosophy in general is useful, as it is largely procedural and descriptive and metaphysics seems to be a further level of abstraction. Is it a level that we need, in order to do both philosophy and science. In tradition, metaphysics refers to the branch of philosophy that attempts to understand the fundamental nature of all reality, whether visible or invisible. For metaphysics is concerned with being in general, hence its conclusion will apply to everything which falls under the extension of the concept of being. Basically, metaphysics is the philosophical study of being and knowing. Without an explanation or an interpretation of the world around us, we would be helpless to deal with reality. Any flaw in our view of reality will make it more difficult to live.
